THE FRICTION

A feed URL can return a page successfully while publishing no new items, changing identifiers, or linking to missing articles. A syntax check alone cannot explain the whole publishing path.

THE PRODUCT WE’RE EXPLORING

FeedBeacon, in three parts.

FeedBeacon would compare scheduled observations of your own feeds and flag changes against a declared publishing expectation. A quiet feed would not automatically be treated as broken.

Three planned capabilities we want to validate with early users.

01 / PLANNED

Delivery and format checks

Planned checks would distinguish transport failures, unexpected content types, and parsing problems.

02 / PLANNED

Item continuity

Proposed comparisons would flag unexpected identifier changes, duplicates, and missing article links.

03 / PLANNED

Alerts with publishing context

Planned thresholds would use your expected cadence and maintenance windows to reduce avoidable alerts.

AN INTENDED WORKFLOW

A clearer next step.
Less work around it.

A focused approach for publishers and small organizations maintaining several public article or announcement feeds.

  1. 01

    Declare the feed and cadence

Register an authorized public feed and explain when new items are normally expected.

  2. 02

    Review a changed observation

Inspect response details and item history before deciding whether an incident needs action.

  3. 03

    Confirm recovery

Retest after a fix and keep the incident explanation with the feed.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Is monitoring running now?

No. This page is a research waitlist. It does not fetch feeds for visitors or send health alerts.

Can it guarantee delivery to every reader?

No. A future monitor could inspect selected public endpoints; readers have their own caches, schedules, and access behavior.

Will it monitor private subscription feeds?

That is outside the initial scope. Do not submit private feed URLs, access tokens, or subscriber information in the interest form.
